Flipkart Big Saving Days vs Amazon Prime Day: Ankur Bisen Dissects What Sets Them Apart?
As consumers brace for the biggest online shopping festival of the year with Flipkart and Amazon set go all guns blazing, there’s something different this time. What is it and how are the two e-commerce giants competing for your attention and wallet?
To answer these questions, Forbes India spoke to Ankur Bisen, Senior Partner and Head – Consumer, Food and Retail at Technopak Advisors, a consultancy that has been tracking the e-commerce scene for close to 15 years now. Ankur shared his insights on the Flipkart Big Saving Days versus Amazon Prime Day sale, and how they reflect the changing consumer preferences and market dynamics in India.
According to Ankur, one of the key differences between the two sales is the duration. While Flipkart’s sale lasted four days in 2023 (July 15-19), Amazon’s sale lasted only two days (July 15-16). This is because Flipkart wants to capture more customers who may not have a Prime membership, while Amazon wants to create a sense of urgency and exclusivity for its Prime members.
Another difference is the product mix. Ankur says that Flipkart has a stronger presence in categories such as smartphones, electronics, fashion and home appliances, while Amazon has an edge in categories such as books, groceries, personal care and beauty products. He states that Flipkart has been more aggressive in launching new products and brands, especially in the smartphone segment, while Amazon has been more focused on expanding its private labels and services.
