Nestlé has been facing a crisis due to a report alleging that their baby food products in India contain high levels of added sugar, contrasting with sugar-free products in developed markets. This has led to scrutiny by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and raised concerns among consumers.
Ankur Bisen, Senior Partner and Head-Consumer, Food and Retail at Technopak, commented on the situation, stating, “It’s not as if this has come as a shock to Nestle.” This suggests that the company was aware of the potential for such controversies given its history and market presence.

Sugar Rush: Brief lowdown on the Nestlé Infant Food Debate in India
Nestlé, the world’s largest food and beverage company, has come under scrutiny for the sugar content in its baby food products sold in India. A report by the Swiss NGO Public Eye, in collaboration with the International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN), revealed that Nestlé’s Cerelac and Nido products contained nearly 3 grams of sugar per serving, which is significantly higher than the sugar-free options offered in European markets. This discrepancy has raised concerns about a double standard in product quality between developing and developed countries.
The controversy intensified as Nestlé India claimed to have reduced added sugars in its baby food products by up to 30% over the past five years, emphasizing its commitment to high-quality ingredients and nutritional standards. However, the allegations have prompted the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) to request the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to investigate the matter. The FSSAI has affirmed its commitment to a thorough investigation and has stated that strict action will be taken if the brand is found guilty.
As of now, the situation remains dynamic, with Nestlé facing potential regulatory repercussions and a growing demand for transparency and adherence to uniform global standards for infant nutrition.
